Top 10 Online Dating Lessons from “The Princess Bride”

Lesson #1: You don’t have to start out as a prince or princess to find true love.

Lesson #2: That being said, true love doesn’t happen everyday so be ready for it when you do find it!

Lesson #3: It’s easier to be ready for true love when you know what you want. So, like Inigo Montoya… be clear about what you want from the very beginning.

Lesson #4: Give people a chance even if they may not seem to be “your type” at first.

Lesson #5: However “R.O.U.S’s” DO exist, so keep your eyes open for the rats that proliferate on sites like Match.com.

Lesson #6: It might be wise to work up an immunity to poison before you start online dating so you can come out of a battle of wits to go on and date the next person.

Lesson #7: Use words you understand in your profile. There is nothing more embarrassing than being caught as a fool!

Lesson #8: Take your time. Rushing only gets you “rotten miracles.” It takes more than a few dates to know if your newest online hottie is worth your trust and love.

Lesson #9: “People in masks can not be trusted.” Beware of the personas people put on that may not represent who they really are. (Refer back to Lesson #8 and give it time.)

Lesson #10: Sometimes it takes a little sacrifice to get what you want, so stick with it!

  1. At the risk of putting my masculinity in question, I’d offer another lesson from “The Princess Bride” as it dates to dating:
Every couple will at least one time, have to enter into the ‘Fire Swamp’ period of their relationship. One could easily succumb to one’s personal ‘R.O.U.S,’ ‘snow sand,’ and ‘fire spurts;’ however, when faced together, there’s nothing the two of you cannot overcome.
    Just my humble opinion. :-)

Eric, well said! And so many people don’t believe the R.O.U.S.es exist and instead interpret them as “oh I guess we’re not right for each other, let’s go back to the catalog and pick another one” and then wonder why they keep ending up in the fire swamp anyway … :-)

  3. I’m so glad I’m married! Might not be the heaven just yet, (thanks, government), but no R.O.U.S (what on earth are they anyway??) for me!

    Good advice, especially number 6!

  4. One of my favorite movies ever. I made Jeff watch it.. ROUS came up at a dinner conversation with my sister and her husband not long after…

  5. Greatest movie ever. So cheesy now, but it was seriously the greatest movie ever when I was 10 years old…
