Quick Tip on Compliments

Quick Tip for the weekend: When complimenting your date… make sure to say something personal as opposed to general. When you make the compliment personal, you tell your date that you really notice them and aren’t just going through the motions of being a polite date.

Example: “You are a great date/conversationalist.” vs. “I had a great time/evening.”

For the guys: If you’re only going to pay one compliment for the evening, pick something about your date’s personality, how she makes you feel, intelligence, etc. Skip the beauty-based compliment unless it’s accompanied by several other (non-physical) compliments. Unless her beauty is the only reason you asked her out… in which case, go with what you know.

For the girls: Same idea but focus on something that shows you admire or respect something about your date. Like that he picked a great restaurant, is a good listener or you really appreciate his kindness to strangers.

NOTE: Please don’t read this as me telling you to not compliment looks… both guys and girls want to know their date finds them attractive. Just don’t lead with a looks-based observation if you can help it. Remember — if you are out with a hottie, they hear how attractive they are all the time. What they don’t hear as often … someone looking beyond the surface and noticing who they are. Be the person who sees beyond the surface and you get major props while making them feel truly appreciated.

So… what’s the most memorable compliment you ever received?

This quick tip has been brought to you by the letter C.
